Why this stage matters

This is the stage that decides how far you go. Developers who understand closures, async, and the event loop learn any framework in weeks, and they are the ones who can review AI-generated code instead of trusting it blindly. Most 'React problems' are really JavaScript problems from this stage.

- You can explain a closure with an example you wrote yourself.
- You can predict 'this' in a regular function, an arrow function, and a method.
Must know
Async JavaScript & the Event Loop
Callbacks, promises, async/await, error handling, AbortController, and how the event loop schedules tasks and microtasks.
You're done when
- You can predict the console output order of mixed setTimeout, Promise, and sync code.
- You run independent requests in parallel with Promise.all and cancel stale ones with AbortController.
Learn next
Modern Language Features (ES2015+)
Iterators and generators, Map and Set, Symbol, Proxy, structuredClone, error handling patterns, and how ECMAScript evolves. The features that show up in library code and in interviews.
You're done when
- You can say when a Map or Set is a better fit than a plain object or array.
- You can read a generator or a Proxy in library code without being lost.

Common mistakes

Memorizing definitions instead of predicting output. If you can't say what a snippet prints, you haven't learned it yet.
Skipping this stage and copying useEffect patterns without understanding closures.
Rushing to React with weak async knowledge. Race conditions and stale data are async bugs, not React bugs.

Checkpoint

You can build a modern vanilla JavaScript app that fetches real data, handles errors, cancels stale requests, and updates the DOM efficiently.

Stage project

Movie / Book Explorer (Vanilla JS)

A search app on top of a free public API (for example Open Library), with no framework.

Done when

Debounced search with loading, error, and empty states.
Search term and page live in the URL, so results are shareable and the back button works.
Favorites saved in localStorage.
Old requests are cancelled with AbortController.
